  15. WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause
  16.      serious, system-wide problems that may require you to
  17.      reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot
  18.      guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of
  19.      Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own
  20.      risk.

  23. SYMPTOMS
  24. ========

  26. When you are trying to save a Registry key from a remote machine's
  27. registry in Windows NT, the Save Key dialog box will display the local
  28. hard disk even though it is not possible to save the key to the local
  29. drive. If you do not have the Administrator privilege on the remote
  30. machine, the following error message will occur:
  31.  
  32.    Insufficient Privilege to Save the Key.

  37. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1
  38. and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this
  39. problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge
  40. Base as it becomes available.

  45. Steps to Reproduce Problem
  46. --------------------------

  48. 1. In File Manager, choose Run from the File menu. 
  49.  
  50. 2. In the Command Line box, type "REGEDT32.EXE" (without the quotation
  51.    marks) and press ENTER.
  52.  
  53. 3. When the Registry Editor opens, choose Select Computer from the
  54.    Registry menu. 
  55.  
  56. 4. Type the name of a remote machine and press ENTER.
  57.  
  58.    You will receive the HKEY_USERS and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hives from
  59.    the remote machine.
  60.  
  61. 5. Select any of the keys on either of these two hives.
  62.  
  63. 6. From the Registry menu, choose Save Key. You will receive a Save
  64.    Key dialog box.
  65.  
  66. 7. In the File Name box, type "C:\TEST.TXT" (without the quotation
  67.    marks) and press ENTER.
  68.  
  69. At this point, if you have sufficient privileges on the remote
  70. machine, the key will be saved to the remote machine, not the local
  71. C:\ drive. Without sufficient privileges, you will receive the above
  72. error message.
